"For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast."
— Ephesians 2:8–9 (ESV)
There is nothing you can do to earn your way to God. This is the revolutionary truth of the Gospel: salvation is a gift. Not a reward, not a wage, not a prize for perfect living — but a pure, extravagant, undeserved gift of God's grace.
The Apostle Paul wrote these words to a church in Ephesus filled with people who had come from all backgrounds — Jews who had followed the Law, Gentiles who had worshipped idols. And yet, the message was the same for both: you are saved by grace alone, through faith alone.
Grace means that God extends His favour to those who deserve the very opposite. We were dead in our trespasses (Ephesians 2:1), following the ways of this world, living in disobedience. And yet — "But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us..." (Ephesians 2:4).
Those two words — "But God" — are perhaps the most powerful in all of Scripture. They represent the turning point of every sinner's story. Your story. My story.
Today, rest in this truth: You don't have to prove yourself to God. You don't have to clean yourself up first. You simply come — broken, needy, humble — and receive what He freely gives: forgiveness, righteousness, and eternal life through Jesus Christ.
Today's Prayer
Father, thank You for the gift of grace — grace I did not earn and do not deserve. Help me to walk today in the fullness of what Your grace provides. Let me not return to striving but rest in what Jesus has already done. In His precious Name, Amen.
