The Lord Is My Shepherd — He Leads with Love

"The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul."

Psalm 23:1–3 (ESV)

Psalm 23 is perhaps the most beloved passage in all of Scripture — and for good reason. In six short verses, David captures the entire posture of the believer before God: total trust, total dependence, total peace.

"The Lord is my shepherd" — this is not a general statement about God being shepherd to the world. This is deeply personal. My shepherd. David had been a shepherd himself; he knew what a good shepherd did. He sought the lost sheep. He carried the weak. He fought the predators. He led to nourishment and rest.

"I shall not want" — this does not mean God's people never face hardship. David himself faced tremendous suffering. Rather, it means that in the care of the Good Shepherd, there is no lack of what truly matters: His presence, His provision, His protection.

"He restores my soul" — the Hebrew word for restore is 'shub', meaning to turn back, to return. The Good Shepherd goes after wandering sheep. He doesn't wait for you to find your way back. He comes for you.

Jesus called Himself "the Good Shepherd" (John 10:11) and said He lays down His life for the sheep. He proved it on the cross. Whatever valley you are walking through today — you are not walking alone.

Today's Prayer

Good Shepherd, thank You that You know me by name and You lead me with love. In every valley and on every mountain, help me to hear Your voice and follow You. Restore what has wandered in my soul. Amen.
